Special Purpose Business Property Assessment Review & Recommendations

Press Statement – December 19, 2013

Special Purpose Business Property Assessment Review & Recommendations

"MPAC Board of Directors and staff have reviewed the Special Purpose Business Property Assessment Review & Recommendations report and appreciate the thoughtful and thorough work undertaken by MPP Steven Del Duca, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Finance, and the Special Purpose Business Property Assessment Review Secretariat.

MPAC agrees with each of the recommendations. The recommendations in the report are aligned with the MPAC Board's commitment to better serve all Ontarians and we are committed to continuing to work with government to make the operational, governance, accountability, assessment methodology, data accuracy and integrity and appeals changes necessary.

In 2012, the Board began this work in earnest with its review and approval of MPAC's 2013–2016 Strategic Plan. Launched in late 2012, the plan was developed with input from a broad cross section of MPAC stakeholders.

The Board agrees with the report's findings that there are some challenges in specialized and unique types of business properties that often involve complex assessment methodologies and MPAC is committed to finding solutions to deliver greater levels of service and improving our assessment process for these types of properties.

We look forward to continuing to work with the province and their timelines to make the changes necessary to improve the property assessment system in Ontario."

Dan Mathieson
Chair, MPAC Board of Directors
