MPAC Delivers Property Assessment Notices to Nearly One Million Property Owners 2014

PICKERING, Ontario, October 29, 2014  – Starting October 29, 2014, nearly one million property owners across Ontario will receive Property Assessment Notices to reflect changes in ownership, value, classification and/or school support, according to the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC).

In the fall of 2012, every property owner in Ontario received a Property Assessment Notice as the result of a province-wide Assessment Update. MPAC continues to update property information during non-Assessment Update years as new homes are built, owners renovate, structures are removed and properties change use. The next province-wide Assessment Update will take place in 2016.

“To ensure we are delivering fair and accurate assessments for Ontarians, we are committed to updating property information on an ongoing basis,” said Larry Hummel, MPAC’s Chief Assessor. “Property owners will only receive a Property Assessment Notice this year if the assessment information for their property has changed.”

Property owners will receive a Notice from MPAC if there has been:

  • a change to property ownership, legal description, or school support;
  • a change to a property’s assessment resulting from a Request for Reconsideration or Assessment Review Board decision;
  • a property value increase/decrease reflecting a change to the property, for example, a new structure, addition, or removal of an old structure; or,
  • a change in the classification or tax liability of the property.

Property owners are encouraged to visit aboutmyproperty.ca to confirm their property details and compare their property with others in their neighbourhood. 2014 Notices will include a roll number and personalized access key, which can be used to log in to aboutmyproperty.ca.

Property owners who receive a Property Assessment Notice this fall have until March 31, 2015 to submit a Request for Reconsideration (RfR) asking MPAC to reconsider their assessment. For greater convenience, RfRs can now be filed directly through aboutmyproperty.ca. Additional information on how to file has been included with every Notice mailed.
