Toronto Star Investigative Report: Is your property tax fair?
The Toronto Star’s findings related to MPAC assessments, as reported on July 8, 2023, paint an inaccurate picture of property valuations in the City of Toronto. We have significant concerns about the methodology the Star used to draw the published conclusions. An independent review by MPAC’s Quality Service Commissioner found no evidence of vertical inequity in MPAC’s 2016 residential values. Other experts share this view.
Property owners in Toronto and across Ontario can be confident in MPAC’s assessments because we are obsessed with getting it right. We follow the highest industry standards and best practices throughout every step of the valuation process. Our assessments are tested against international standards, are reviewed by third-party evaluators, and have consistently met or surpassed the standards.
MPAC has transformed as an organization over the past 20 years. We are more transparent and more accessible than ever.
MPAC was recently featured in the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner’s Transparency Showcase – and that’s because we are providing more information to the public than ever before. If you haven’t visited our website, mpac.ca, it’s worth exploring. And if you’re concerned about your assessment – we have a straightforward process for that.
Anyone who has questions about their assessments is encouraged to log on to the AboutMyProperty portal on mpac.ca to learn more about how your property was assessed, view the information we have on file and compare your property to others in your neighbourhood, free of charge.
